Brief Introduction
Saigon University (SGU) is part of a public sector and is managed by the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET). It is originally known as the Teacher Training College, founded in 1976 in an attempt to reform the education after Vietnam War. It was established and renamed as SGU on 25th April, 2007, continuing its tradition in order to develop and transform itself to meet the requirements of modern day students and higher education teaching.
With a fast-growing economy on the road towards global integration, Vietnam is in urgent need of more and more young and well-trained talents of high educational standards to be the driving force of national advancement goals. SGU is striving to complete that mission by solidifying its core position in the university sector. Its aims are, to ensure mental and material life are carefully cared for, and Vietnamese citizens are studying in the best academic environment and encouraged to improve their creativity and innovation so that they can be the young, dynamic and creative intellectuals with political and moral maturity. In addition, SGU is attempting to establish an educational organization with the unique characteristics but still keep the traditional values in which human basic foundation is standard for sustainable development.
Since established in 2007, the University brings its own mission in creating equal opportunities for education, pursuing and sharing knowledge to train individuals capable of adjusting, of lifelong learning and of competing in a changing global environment. Built on an academic heritage, SGU has gained significant achievements in providing talented and high quality human resources to the economy, and thus made great contribution to the cause of industrialisation, modernisation and global economic integration of the country. The University is now offering a wide range of majors and specialisations in Economics – Technology, Cultural – Social, Law, Politics, Art and Pedagogy. Currently, there are more than 19,600 full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in 38 academic programmes for bachelor degrees, 12 for master degrees, and 5 doctorate degrees. These programmes provide students access to a very diverse selection of academic fields, and enhance students’ capabilities to practice what they learn into professional achievements.
